The son of prominent Bradford photographer Thomas Appleton, Richard James Appleton took over his father’s business in the 1890s, and soon became interested in the burgeoning art of cinematography. In 1896 he created the Cieroscope, a device which combined the three functions of camera, printer, and projector. He also produced his own films, which received some praise.
