Nobleman Dmitri Nekhlyudov is summoned to serve on the jury in the case of a prostitute who is being tried for murder. As the prisoner is brought in, he is shocked to recognise her as his aunt’s ward, whom he seduced some years ago. Realising that he played a role in determining her path, he feels guilty and attempts to correct the mistake.
